SATURDAY 28th MAY – COOGEE DIGGERS CLUB

The Atlantics most famous song “Bombora” was written by Jim Skiathitis and Peter Hood in a house that Jim lived in with his parents in Oberon Street, Coogee in 1963.
When Martin Cilia joined the band in 1999 unbeknown to him it turned out that he lived just around the corner from the “Bombora” house when he wrote The Atlantics ‘comeback’ album “Flight of the Surf Guitar”.

The Atlantics’ seminal surf classic instrumental ‘Bombora’ shot to number one for a record eight weeks in1963 and charted around the world. Their follow up single ‘The Crusher’ also charted strongly. The Atlantics went on to record seven more singles and four LP’s, all of which are now regarded as classics of the Surf Instrumental Genre. In 2000 Bombora was given the ultimate accolade by being used in the closing ceremony of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.  After a long break The Atlantics reformed in 1999 with original members Jim Skiathitis, Peter Hood and Bosco Bosanac along with new guitarist, Martin Cilia and they released four new CDs ‘Flight Of The Surf Guitar’, ‘Atlantics – The Next Generation’, ‘Point Zero’ and ‘Atlantics -The Best Of’.

In 2006, bassist Bosanac, retired from the band and was replaced by Michael Smith. The Atlantics’ brilliant performances on tours around Australia with the spectacular ‘Long Way To The Top’ series of concerts and as the support act on the Beach Boys and Chris Isaak  shows, resulted in rave reviews for their music and their talents and once again cemented their title of ‘Australia’s Greatest Instrumental Band…’ ever.  A subsequent string of live appearances at big shows and festivals around the country and overseas, thrilled original fans and introduced a whole new generation to the driving, infectious guitar sounds of The Atlantics. More recently the The Atlantics featured on the documentary/ DVD on Australian surf music ‘Delightful Rain’, released on the Bombora label, which has screened several times on the ABC. The documentary Live At Freshwater, filmed at the same time was screened on ABC 1 on Boxing Day 2010.

The Atlantics are now releasing ‘The Collectibles’, a memorable collection of songs between 1966 and 2010. Ten of the songs have had previous worldwide release and are now extremely rare and near impossible to find elsewhere. These include 3 vocal tracks recorded by The Atlantics in the mid 60’s during what is now considered by many as their “Garage Days”. Also included are studio versions of 3 songs originally appearing on the “Live At Freshwater” DVD recorded in March 2006 and has the added Bonus of a brand new track, “Tequilla Slammer”.
